The impact of digital tools on students' engagement and academic performance in grade VII mathematics classroom: An action research

Abstract

This paper explored the effectiveness of using digital applications Adapt Mind and GeoGebra on students’ engagement and achievement in Grade VII the mathematics classroom. This is an action research study working on single cycle. Adapt Mind and GeoGebra were the main instructional tools used in the process of intervention to facilitate the interactive learning environment. The study is done with in natural classroom environment among Grade VII students. Quantitative data is used to analyse both engagement and academic achievement of Grade VII students in mathematics classroom. The findings of the research demonstrated that the academic performance and engagement had significantly improved statistically after the integration of digital tools. The academic scores of students have increased in post-test after using digital applications Adapt Mind and GeoGebra. Moreover, students have shown increased participation while using the apps. The research paper concludes that Adapt mind and GeoGebra can contribute to the increased involvement and academic achievement of students in mathematics classrooms significantly.
